What is Virtual Private Network?

4 Mins read

Virtual Private Network or VPN is a virtual way of working, creating anonymity, privacy and security to users with the establishment of a private network connection across a public-based network connection. It further creates anonymity by generating a combination with proxy servers, and overlay networks.

Virtual private network or VPN, founded in the year 1996 by a Microsoft employee to establish peer-to-peer tunneling protocol or PPTP

VPN has been a known way of working among corporates and other working professionals for more than two decades. But, it gained more popularity during the unfortunate unforeseen, and debilitating pandemic period, when most of the working population was working from home.VPN is a trusted way of working provided encryption of data being exchanged across a private network. During the prevailing time, when traveling outdoors and the meeting is not still considered safe it is VPN, which is helping many organizations to cooperate and work smoothly without much lag.

As mentioned above, it is a virtual way for business owners and employees for working for maintaining the privacy and secrecy of the work been done. Working on VPN voluntary protects the data being exchanged through encryption. Encryption is the process of converting authorized data into codes to prevent unauthorized use, used over the World Wide Web.

How Does VPN Work?

While connecting your computer to a network through the computer (or another device, such as a smartphone or phablet) to a virtual network, the connection device acts as if it’s on the same local network as the virtual network. The accumulated network traffic is processed over a secure connection to the virtual network. Here your device behaves as if it’s on the same network; this allows you to securely access the local network resources even when you’re in a different part of the world. Further, you will also be able to use the Internet as if you were physically present at the VPN’s location, which has some benefits if you’re using pubic Wi-Fi or want to access geo-blocked websites.

While you are browsing through the web while connected to a virtual network, your computer contacts the website through the encrypted virtual network connection. The virtual network forwards the request for you and forwards the response from the website back through the secure connection

To be brief, a VPN connects your desktop or laptop, smartphone, or tablet to the clients/customer computer (called a server) somewhere on the internet, and allows you to browse the internet using that computer’s internet connection. So if that server is in a different area, zone or country, it will portray you as if you are coming from that country, and you can potentially access things that you couldn’t otherwise.

You are wondering, how does this help you? Excellent question! You can use a VPN to:

•       Side step through the geographic restrictions on websites or streaming video and audio.

•       Watch streaming media like Netflix and Hulu.

•       Save yourself from snooping on untrustworthy Wi-Fi hotspots, which might steal or fabricate some crucial information.

•       Empowers to get some obscurity and some anonymity online by hiding your true location.

•       Protect yourself from being logged while torrenting.

Maximum owners, employees, or people are still using a VPN for torrenting or bypassing geographic restrictions to watch content in a different country. It is a very useful and hindrance-free method for protecting yourself while working at a cafe or restaurant. This is one of the advantages or pros of using a VPN.

Few Examples of VPN Available in Software Industry:-

Avast Secureline VPN– It is one the best VPN service, providers that give you great speed and features.

Express VPN – This network-type server has the best combination of ease-of-use, high-speed servers, and supports streaming media and torrenting, all for a low price.

Tunnel bear – This network-type server is really easy to use, is great for using at the coffee shop, and has a (limited) free tier.

Strong VPN – Network type not quite as easy to use as the others, but you can use them for torrenting and streaming media.
