4 Mins read

Every year LIC Assistant exam is conducted by the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC)  to recruit eligible candidates for the post of Assistant. It is one of the most awaited exams each year for aspirants preparing for the banking and insurance exams. The exam gives young graduates a golden opportunity to bag a government job and work with India’s largest Insurance company with 8 zonal offices, 113 divisional and 2048 branch offices.

Though millions of candidates appear for the LIC assistant exam only a few thousand make it through. This is because of the limited number of vacancies and the rising level of competition which has caused an increase in the difficulty level of the exam. Due to this, aspirants preparing for the LIC assistant exam must ensure that they have a top-notch preparation in order to crack it.

On that note, let’s talk about some subject-wise preparation tips that will help candidates to score well in each section and crack the LIC assistant exam.

Subject-wise Preparation Tips

The LIC assistant exam is conducted in two stages i.e., the Prelims and Mains exam. The prelims exam contains 100 questions divided into three sections mainly, Quantitative aptitude, Reasoning ability and English language to be attempted in 60 minutes.

While the mains exam for the North/North Central/Central/Western zones comprises five sections i.e., Quantitative aptitude, Reasoning ability & computer aptitude, General/Financial Awareness, English and Hindi language. However, the Hindi language section is not included in the Mains exam for the Eastern/South Central/Southern zones. The Mains exam contains 200 questions with a time duration of 150 minutes.

Given below are some subject-wise preparation tips to prepare effectively for the LIC assistant exam.

Quantitative Aptitude

This is the most scoring section for some but a frightening one for others. Candidates who want to score well in the quantitative aptitude section must have a sound knowledge and understanding of fundamental concepts and must be able to calculate faster with accuracy.

Firstly, any doubt in the fundamentals behind concepts can hinder your performance in this section during the exam. As at times, basic concepts of one chapter form the premise of the concepts in others. For instance, the fundamentals of Ratio are used in chapters such as mixture and allegation and partnership.

Secondly, you will be given only 20 minutes in prelims to attempt 35 questions. This is where speed calculation can be of great help and can save you a lot of time. Candidates should learn formulas and short tricks to reduce the number of steps involved in solving a question. Apart from this, they are advised to memorize tables up to 20, squares up to 30 and cubes up to 20 at least to save time during exams.

Lastly, aspirants must focus more on the topics that are important and have higher weightage in the section such as Simplification and Approximation, Number series, Data interpretation and Quadratic equations. If you have prepared these topics thoroughly and have practiced enough questions on them, then you can fetch 12 to 15 marks easily. After this, you can go for other topics like Profit and loss, Average, Simple and compound interest and more.

Reasoning Ability

The only mantra to score well in the reasoning ability section is to practice as many questions as possible in important topics such as Sitting arrangement, Puzzles, Syllogism, Inequality, Alphanumeric and alphabetical series, Blood relation, Coding and decoding, Direction and distance and more.

Make sure to solve previous years LIC assistant question papers to get insight into the pattern and type of questions to expect in the exam. Also, attempt regular online mock tests and quizzes offered by online exam preparation portals such as Testbook.

These online platforms not only provide test series and quizzes for students to practice questions but the tests and quizzes offered include detailed performance analysis. This allows the students to identify and rectify the mistakes they are making to prepare better for the exam.

English Language

A candidate can easily score above 25 marks in prelims and above 30 marks in the mains exam. All that is required is he/she should be acquainted with the basic grammar rules concerning the eight parts of speech, have good comprehensive reading and vocabulary skills.

To prepare for grammar, candidates must go through books like Wren and Martin and English is Easy by Chetanand Singh to learn and understand various grammar rules. Furthermore, they should practice as many questions and attempt quizzes on topics such as Cloze test, Sentence rearrangement, Error detection, Phrase and Sentence replacement, Misspelled words and more.

To improve comprehensive reading and vocabulary skills, candidates must read renowned English daily newspapers and weekly magazines. Moreover, they can buy Word power made easy books and learn a few words daily from it and use them in daily life to build vocabulary. At last, candidates are advised to solve a few comprehensive passage questions daily.

General/ Financial Awareness

This is one of the most time-saving and scoring sections of all. A candidate must go through the current and financial affairs of the last six months before the date of the exam. Furthermore, he/she must have a thorough knowledge of the General History of India, General Science, Recent monetary and fiscal policies, Indian Financial System, Honours and Awards, Appointments and Resignation and more.

Aspirants can buy daily, weekly or monthly current and banking affairs material to study or can download Current Affairs & General Knowledge App from the Google play store. Many online exam preparation platforms have launched these apps where students can get free daily, weekly and monthly current affairs content to prepare for the General Awareness section.
