4 Mins read

As the world is evolving around us we have new technology around us. Life is becoming more challenging every day. Those who are smart enough to cope with the change quickly are those who are called survivors. There are those people who fail to cope with the change and are often termed as slow learners. These are the ones who find it a bit challenging to deal with the changes and evolve with the world around them.

As a result, they start becoming depressed and stressed. Their behaviour changes and they become irritable, they fail to focus or concentrate on a task. Eventually, they have not counted as performers anymore. Due to all of this, that particular person’s whole life becomes affected whether it is personal or professional. He starts isolating himself from others and pushes everyone away.

That’s how dangerous stress is and it can be triggered by anything failure, loss, and anxiety and in worst cases it turns into depression. The discussed situation starts affecting the person mentally then emotionally leading to physically. If such a person starts getting physically affected, that means it is an alarming situation and the person needs an expert to pull him out of the misery. These experts are professionals who help others to calm their thoughts and feeling and control their own life back again.

Psychotherapy – supporting to control you

Psychotherapy is a procedure carried out by a professional psychotherapist who is certified to support people suffering from emotional or mental disorders. The therapy is a talk session where the suffering person is allowed to talk his heart out. If he is unable to talk, the professional psychotherapist guides the patient through questioning. The therapy is used to help people get control of their life again and cope with depression or stress.  As a result, the patient starts feeling better and get back to his day to day activity as required.

Therapy Sessions

The therapy sessions may take place daily, weekly or monthly depending on the situation of the patient. If the situation is worse, the patient is given more time. The normal talk time for a psychotherapist and the patient is 30 – 50 minutes. One of the very important things to remember is the confidentiality of the information shared by the patient with the therapist. The patient shares the personal as well as some professional secrets during the sessions and it is his right and therapist’s responsibility to make sure that the information is kept confidential.

Types of Psychotherapy

Normally the psychotherapies are based on the process where the therapist gets to know about patients’ past and then after knowing that he decides the type of therapy needed by the patient. Let us talk about the types of psychotherapies in a little more detail.

Cognitive Psychotherapy:

This therapy is based on two types, one is cognitive behavioural psychotherapy which mainly helps to improve a patients’ current behaviour based on what he feels and thinks presently. It is not based on the person’s past. The therapist and patient work together to improve the patients’ condition which includes the major role to be played by the patient. The patient has to monitor himself and notice what triggers a certain behaviour. The observation is then shared with the therapist and then they both devise a solution or strategy to cope with a certain behaviour. To learn more about it, click here.

Psychodynamic Therapy:

This type of psychotherapy focuses on the mental and emotional issues of a person suffering instead of behavioral issues. The therapists help their clients to monitor how a certain emotion was triggered and how it impacts their current behavior. The impact of a certain event that caused particular mental and emotional imbalance is evaluated. Next task is to help the suffering person to control their emotions and feeling along with the help of their therapist.

Humanistic, Interpersonal and Family or Couple therapies

Humanistic therapy is based on mental imbalance or disorder. It helps the suffering person to help with the mental sickness or challenges and supports a person to be well again.  It guides the clients to focus on someone’s perspective, analyze their own and respect others’ perspective too. It helps the suffering person to accept that every human has their own point of view and it should be considered and accepted the way it is.

Interpersonal therapies focus on depression. A person suffering from depression is treated to develop healthy relationship with the people around them. The bond that is present between friends and family is strengthened by reducing depression and helping to focus on good things.

Couple or family therapies help the sufferer to develop a sense of responsibility towards other relationships which are important. The relationships which can be spouse, parents or kids need to be respected and given the significance they deserve. The therapies help resolve family conflicts by understanding the situation and responding to that in a particular sensible manner. The change in the person as a result proves to be beneficial for the entire family especially the person himself.

Choosing a therapist

Choosing the right therapist is very important. Before you look for a therapist for yourself or anyone in your close relation, ask for reviews or references. Going through a reference or the feedback from other patients helps you analyze if the person is the right one for you.

Once you find a good therapist, spend some time with him to see if he is the one who you are satisfied sharing your feelings with. Psychotherapy is a process of conversation between the therapist and client while keeping confidentiality in focus. It’s really helpful if you develop a healthy and friendly relationship with your therapist. It will speed up your recovery process and to trust the person while sharing your concerns and issues comfortably.

Develop positive attitude

Developing a positive attitude is really important at this stage. Be optimistic and accept the challenge. Know that you can do it and you will.
